What's in a name?
Data Capture Engineer, Digital Media Assistant, Digital Management Tech, Digital Loader, Digi - loader, Digital Asset Manager, RED Tech, and Data Wrangler. These are all names that have been bestowed on the one that backs up and checks data. Most have even called him/her a DIT (digital imaging technician), but that one is incorrect. Traditionally, a DIT is not responsible for data. A DIT works with the image directly while shooting, more typically in the HD world and not so much in the RED world. Whereas, a data wrangler can assist a DP to achieve a look in preparation for editorial.

Who does the data Wrangler work for... Really? Clearly the Data Wrangler is hired by the producer. However, the data wrangler also needs to be a comfortable liaison between the DP and editor. As a camera operator myself, I take care to act as 'eyes in the back of the head' of the DP. I look for anything that may be overlooked, such as a light or boom pole in the shot or soft focus. If found, I notify the DP at a convienient time. One of my most important jobs is to give the editor what the DP intended. Likewise, the editor will often have specific needs that I will accommodate.
